Located amongst the sandy dunes of Lake Michigan, Saugatuck is a unique small town community
offering something for everyone! The downtown streets are filled with boutique shops, ice
cream stores, waterfront restaurants, and more. On the other side of the river are the sand
dunes which line the shores of Lake Michigan. Here you will find Oval beach, Saugatuck's
most popular public beach, where you can spend hours wandering through the dunes, napping
on the beach, or playing in the waves!
Once primarily a “summer town”, Saugatuck now offers
a full year’s worth of reasons to visit! Kicking off each
year with New Year’s Eve fireworks over the bay, and ending
by transforming the town into a “twinkling Currier and Ives
print”, each month offers its own bit of whimsy, and the
perfect reason to escape from the “real” world. Each
event offers a special Saugatuck touch. Here the Fourth of July
fireworks are always on the 4th, no matter what day of the week
that may be, and the Christmas lights are turned on the day AFTER
Thanksgiving rather than in October! Some of our events are wonderfully
local. June brings a fabulous film festival. Two summer theaters
and a month of Chamber Music performances offer first rate entertainment
during July and August. Colorful maples and long, warm fall days
can be enjoyed at October’s Goose Festival and Halloween-Harvest
Celebration. Art is enjoyed year ‘round with Gallery Strolls,
Art-Around-Town displays, and art classes for young and old.
The National Trust for Historic Preservation recently named Saugatuck, Michigan, as one of America’s 12 most unique places, stating, “Few vacation destinations provide such an extraordinary combination of tourism opportunities all in one location.” And no wonder: Whatever your ideal vacation— lounging on exquisite, sandy beaches, swimming, boating, fishing, bird watching, historic architecture, exploring forests and sand dunes, photography, bike riding, dune rides, family or fine dining, shopping for art and unique items in historic downtown Saugatuck, sampling local wines, savoring Michigan’s mouth-watering fudge and delicious ice cream—you’ll find it all in Saugatuck, the heart of Michigan’s Art Coast.
